Farewell and God Bless

Cake with model piano on it. Linda, John and the piano cake. John cuts the piano cake.

After 8 years of service to St John's, John has stepped down as the church organist and choir director. He was given a card, an enormous present and loud appreciative applause.

After the service, drinks and nibbles were served while John cut a 'piano' cake kindly provided by Linda. Many stayed to chat, reminisce and to thank John personally.

John W retires

Our church organist, John (second from the right), is retiring on 16 February 2025. He has given many years faithful service and will be greatly missed, especially by the choir.

Please try and be in church for the service that Sunday and be part of the celebration of John's time at St John's.

Christopher Sayles - Munch with Music - 5 February 2025

A son of Caterham returned after over a decade to give a scintillating performance with a programme that included compostions from both Bach and Beethoven.

J S Bach (1685-1750)

French Suite No. 3 in B Minor, BWV 814
1. Allemande
2. Courante
3. Sarabande
4. Angloise
5. Minuet & Trio
6. Gigue

Luwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)

Piano Sonata No. 23 in F-Minor, Op. 57, Appassionata
1. Allegro assai
2. Andante con moto
3. Allegro ma non troppo

Christopher set both pieces in context with an enthusiasm and expertise that displayed his talent as a teacher (in Berlin) as well as a pianist. The performance was greatly appreciated and applauded loudly.

Works on the hall

Building works at church hall.

Work will be starting Monday 20 January to improve the Church Hall.

A new path suitable for wheelchairs, buggies and those who hate the steps, is being put in from Church Walk to the front door.

Inside the toilets will be reconfigured. The Gents will become a toilet for the disabled, and the Ladies changed to 2 Unisex toilets one opening into the lobby and the other into the area where the coat hooks currently are.

There will always be one toilet available during the works and this will be the one in the Gents to start with. The works will take at least 3 weeks to complete.

Activity Cafe in 2025

Activity Cafe, for people living memory loss and those who support them.

The cafe is expected to open again in the spring once building work, for improvements to the church hall, is completed.

A multitude of angels

Cloth angels hang at the end of pews.

And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

In St John's, the multitude are a little way away.
